Steel Capped Records Proudly Presents:
The Subcity Dwellers' "Out On The Streets" CDEP
Formed in 2002 by a young group of punk and ska fanatics, Winnipeg's Subcity Dwellers set out to play ska music unlike what any other band in Canada was playing. It's not that they were trying to revolutionize the genre, it's just that while some bands were taking a crack at 3rd/4th (or is it 5th now???) wave ska, the Dwellers yearned to bring back some of the street elements, both musically and lyrically, brought forth by early British and American bands. With members who either currently or formerly played in favourite local punk and ska acts The Crackdown, Brat Attack, Barrymores, HNP, The Racketeers, and The Afterbeat, the Dwellers emerged in the local scene with loads of experience and loads of talent...and it showed.
In early 2004, the band collaborated with Winnipeg's World Conquest Records to put out the first-rate "Let's Get This Shit Started" demo, a well-received first crack at the studio which garnered fine support from the local scene and media. Uptown Magazine dubbed it "Very tasty ska/punk in the Rancid/Ivy vein from a creative Winnipeg crew that certainly knows the score." In the meantime, the Dwellers' live show began raising more and more eyebrows as dance floors were left reeling, and headlining bands, more often than not, had their "thunder stolen" so to speak. While much of 2004 was spent adjusting to lineup changes, notably a new singer, the year was also an opportunity for the band to expand its musical horizons to incorporate thier eclectic influences.
Here we are in 2005 and the Subcity Dwellers are ready to unleash thier "Out On The Streets" CDEP! While their core ska and punk influences like The Clash, Skoidats, Inspecter 7, Rancid, and The Specials still provides the foundation for their sound, the band now seemlessly blends in jazz, blues, and dub styles to thoroughly devastate every dance floor they encounter! If you've been waiting for ages to hear rabblerousing ska played with an edge again, the Subcity Sound is here...and sounding better than ever!
