Comrades,
Here are some hilarious quotes from David Renton's "Anti-fascism in the (British) Northwest 1976-
1982".
The first is about the experience of a university student (I believe involved with the Anti-Nazi League):
"Owen was another student from Salford University. He had never been in a situation like this before. "There were some NF and that was the first time I had seen the steel-pointed Union Jack DM's (what?) and shaved heads up close. I had shoulder-length hair and was busy growing my first beard- like you do (no I don't), when this NF guy made eye contact with me and shouted "you're the next Kevin Gateley, you're gonna die you long-haired communist bastard"".
"Needless to say I found this quite disturbing and was somewhat nonplussed by the total indifference of the constabulary standing in between me and this guy"
That about sums it up when you let college radicals and social workers direct the anti-fascist movement, doesn't it?
Here's another choice quote. A Liverpool bootboy talks about joining the SWP after the Battle of Lewisham that took place in London in Autumn 1977:
"I was part of a gang of about 20 people, scallies really. Two or three of us joined the SWP (Socialist Workers Party- UK), then the rest of us signed up. Lewisham had a real impact on me. We were looking for a left group to
join. On the telly it said that the SWP were the bootboys of the left, and we were bootboys, in Liverpool. We said "we'll have a bit of this!".
Ha ha ha. Wow, that really MUST have been the '70's. Can anyone imagine 20 bootboys joining the British SWP in this day and age? Not fucking likely!

Also be sure and browse the rest of Mr. Renton's site. He is a member of the British SWP, and he's the accomplished author of quite a few books on fascism and anti-fascism, as well as other class-struggle related issues. He has written the best history I've found on the UK Rock Against Racism movement ("The Anti-Nazi League in 1970's Britain"), an excellet eulogy for SWP organizer and RAR historian David Widgery, and an article on the murder of UK anti-fascist activist Blair Peach by the British police.
Finally, Mr. Renton is currently working on a book on "Anti-Fascism in 1970's Britain". Should be an exciting read.
