This Day in Anti-Fascist History: Battle of Lewisham Aug 13, 1977 Comrades, It’s now 28 years since the Battle of Lewisham, when the National Front attempted to march through the mostly West Indian neighborhood in south east London. They were met by committed anti-fascists, including many militants from the Anti-Nazi League (at a time when that name still carried weight). Unable to stop the NF march, anti-fascists ended up battling the police. This marked the first time in history that police in the UK used riot shields (outside of Northern Ireland). There was a lot of footage shot of the confrontations at Lewisham. If I’m not mistaken, some even made it into the Clash film “Rude Boy”. Maybe someone from the UK could elaborate more on the political significance of what happened at Lewisham.
